The Big Tidy Up campaign logoSome areas have been tidied but others remain to do. We have some materials provided by the Big Tidy Up campaign: aprons. gloves, litter-grab, bags, stickers, posters etc.

We are waiting for the winter clear-up to be completed.

London Parks Bid

The Mayor of London is giving ten grants of up to £400,000 to London's most needy parks to make them cleaner, safer, greener, and nicer places to visit. Londoners are now invited to vote for which parks win an award. Sunny Hill park was not selected to represent Barnet; in fact, Barnet have only one park in the competiton: Dollis Valley Green Walk.

Go to the London Government site to record your vote, before 30th January 2008.

Wildlife & nature news

Bats have been seen aling the western boundary and around the trees of the 'avenue'. A barn owl has been heard along the top path. Parakeets have been observed again and in neighbouring gardens.

Blacberries are now available in various areas pf the park - 1kg in just three days. Why not make some blackberry sorbet or some blackberry gin?

Summer is here?

The goalposts have been removed and a cricket boundary painted. It must be summer. Parakeets have been sighted on several occasions across the park, but none seem to have settled. They are resident around the Welsh Harp and Hampstead Heath. April 17th.

Tree-planting

The current mayor planted a tree on March 18th continuing the sequence from near the car park and cafe.

Iny overhanging path in Sunny Hill ParkCondition of the park

The top path from Church Terrace has been cleared of overgrowth and graffiti on walls and fences over-painted by Community Service. Graffiti which re-appeared has been over-painted.

Clear up work has not been completed - this is being pursued. Daniel is waiting an update from the park manager, but to date has only had apologies and reassurance that an update will be forthcoming. The new fence at the steps is a temporary measure to protect against people slipping on the dangerous steps. A lady fell in June while carrying a small baby. (They were both ok.) Feb 14.

The park is going through a major clear up. This should take a few weeks, and will include smartening the plants, removal of litter, some work on drainage, repairs to benches, removal of dead dumped trees and larger rubbish.

A new park’s graffiti unit will be starting a clear up and monitoring programme at the end of January or start of February.

A new park warden will be posted part time at the park to bring do basic maintenance and rubbish collection, and to report matters to the council. Jan 14

Problem: the overhanging branches of ivy along the top path which starts at Church Terrace was reported by email to Barnet's Parks & Open Spaces department on 10 December 2007 by Phil.

Result: Parks rang Phil on 14 December to say that, after seeing the problem, they would be cutting back the ivy in the next week, rather than wait for the winter clear-up in January. Obstruction cleared by 20 December.
